Three Steps To A Successful Garage Sale

Three Steps To A Successful Garage Sale

There comes a time for some people in Austin, TX when there’s a need to clear things out. It might be because there’s a move coming, and there’s no desire to bring everything along. In other cases, it might just be a case of deciding to make a change, start fresh, and get rid of those things that don’t inspire joy.

Whether there’s a pragmatic or Marie-Kondo-inspired need to clear things out in Austin, TX, one way to do it, and make a little bit of money on the side is with the classic garage sale. But if you’ve never done this before, how do you make it go as smoothly as possible? There are three basic steps.

Get Organized

The most important first step is taking the time to inventory what you’re willing to put on sale. It’s usually better to get this done as early as possible so that you can be definitive about your feelings. Some people may, if there’s a lot of emotional attachment, find they are unable to carry out a garage sale at all, because of the difficulty of parting with anything.

Most people, however, should be able to come up with a respectable pile of things they are willing to get rid of. Once you know, you can start researching pricing on similar items, to make sure you’re not asking for prices so high you don’t sell anything.

Promote A Date

Now that you know you’re going to have a garage sale, you need to advertise this. The two best ways to do this these days are online, through local community websites, and social media, and, of course, printing out flyers and putting them up around the neighborhood.

Do not discount the effectiveness of local print advertising! While there are garage sale specialists that are always on the lookout for garage sale announcements, don’t be too surprised if a lot of the visitors you get are actually from the neighborhood. Few can resist a potentially good deal when it’s just around the corner!

Decide Your Time & Arrange Your Items

This is going to be a matter of need versus convenience. Dedicated garage sale “hunters” like to get out early in the morning, because they know that that’s when the best deals are available. If you want to cater to this crowd, you may want to set an earlier time of 7 or 8 am local.

Make sure that you have plenty of space. The more organized your garage sale is, the easier it will be to entice people to stick around and look over things. Remember your goal is to divest yourself of these things, so make it easy for people to see what’s on offer. And of course, keep in mind that people will try and talk you down on prices. Whether you indulge them or not is up to you.

Garage sales happen all over Austin, TX, so there’s no reason why you can’t run one yourself and manage to clear out your accumulated “stuff” and make a little money in the process!
